American Admiral to Brief Congress as Bipartisan Scrutiny Intensifies Over Maritime Engagement

A high-ranking US Navy officer is scheduled to deliver a classified update to lawmakers monitoring the military this Thursday, as they probe a American attack on a vessel in the Caribbean Sea. The incident, which allegedly targeted a craft carrying drugs, reportedly involved a follow-up engagement that eliminated any remaining individuals.

White House Defends Strikes as Defensive Measures

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, on the start of the week stated that the follow-on engagement was carried out “as a defensive action” and in accordance with regulations governing military engagement. Bipartisan scrutiny has mounted over a report that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave a verbal order in last month to strike the vessel.

Democrats have said the allegations, first reported last week, could amount to a war crime, and Republicans have also expressed their apprehensions about the legality of the attack on 2 September. The Congressional military oversight panels have opened investigations into the recent series of US military strikes on vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific waters.

“The Defense Secretary directed the naval commander to execute these kinetic strikes,” said Leavitt. “The commander acted well within his authority and the law, overseeing the engagement to ensure the boat was neutralized and the danger to the United States of America was removed.”

In her comments to reporters, Leavitt did not dispute the report that there were individuals who survived after the first strike. Her justification came after ex-President Donald Trump a day earlier remarked he “wouldn’t have wanted that – not a second strike” when asked about the incident.

Growing Legislative Concern and Administration Support

Late on Monday, Hegseth wrote online: “The Admiral is an American hero, a true professional, and has my full and complete backing. I support him and the battlefield judgments he has made – on the September 2nd operation and all others since.”

A month following the engagement, Bradley was elevated from head of Joint Special Operations Command to commander of US Special Operations Command.

Concern over the administration’s military strikes against alleged narcotics-trafficking vessels has been growing in Congress, but particulars of this subsequent attack shocked many lawmakers from across the aisle and generated stark questions about the legality of the operations and the overall strategy in the area, particularly toward Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro.

The lawmakers said they did not know whether last week’s report was true, and some Republicans were sceptical. Nevertheless, they stated the alleged targeting of individuals of an first missile strike posed grave issues and merited additional investigation.

Administration and Pentagon Officials Reiterate Position

The White House weighed in after the president on the weekend vigorously supported Hegseth. “Secretary Hegseth said he did not order the killing of those two men,” Trump said. He added, “And I trust him.”

Leavitt said Hegseth had conversed with congressional representatives who may have expressed some concerns about the allegations over the past few days.

Gen Dan Caine, the chair of the joint chiefs of staff, also communicated over the weekend period with the two Republican and two Democratic lawmakers leading the Senate and House armed services committees. He reiterated “his trust and confidence in the experienced commanders at every echelon”, Caine’s office stated in a statement.

The release added that the call focused on “discussing the intent and legality of missions to interrupt illicit trafficking networks which threaten the security and stability of the western hemisphere”.

Congressional Leaders Respond and Promise Probe

The top Senate Republican, John Thune, on the week's start broadly defended the operations, echoing the administration position that they were necessary to stop the flow of illegal narcotics into the US.

Thune said the panels in the legislature would investigate what happened. “I don’t think you want to make any judgments or deductions until you have complete information,” he said of the 2 September attack. “We’ll see where they point.”

After the news article, Hegseth said on the end of the week that “fake news is producing more fabricated, inflammatory, and derogatory coverage to discredit our incredible service members working to protect the homeland”.

“Our ongoing missions in the region are legal under both US and international law, with all actions in accordance with the rules of war – and sanctioned by the best military and civilian lawyers, throughout the military hierarchy,” Hegseth wrote.

The top Senate Democrat, Chuck Schumer, labeled Hegseth a “disgrace” over his reaction to critics. Schumer demanded that Hegseth release the video of the strike and testify under oath about what happened.

The Republican senator for the state of Mississippi, Roger Wicker, the chair of the Senate military panel, vowed that his panel’s inquiry would be “done by the numbers”.

“We’ll find out the facts,” he said, stating that the ramifications of the report were “grave accusations”.

The 2 September strike was part of a sequence executed by the US military in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean as Trump has directed the deployment of a naval group of warships near Venezuela, including the biggest US aircraft carrier. Over 80 people were fatally wounded in the strikes.
