An Emotional Event as Rosenior Overcomes Boundaries

"He is a top coach who understands the game inside out, and that's the most important thing.

"However, in my role as the Blues' first African heritage player, it would be dishonest to claim this appointment does not affect me."

These were the words of the former Chelsea winger, who earned his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench back in the spring of 1982.

This week, Chelsea appointed Strasbourg manager Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next head coach after the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the multi-club BlueCo that also controls Chelsea.

There have been only 12 black head coaches – not including those in temporary caretaker positions – in England's top flight since it began 34 years ago.

"What really strikes me about Liam is that he was raised and developed his game locally, he understands this community," added Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters observe someone like Liam in charge of their club, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a family that fights for what's right… it is profound demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, it is a huge moment for Chelsea, for the capital, for every young person dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Do the Numbers Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became the Blues' manager in 1996 and became the top flight's first African heritage head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering English black manager in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present top flight boss from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game corresponds with a lack of representation at executive level.

According to the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, 43% of Premier League players come from black backgrounds.

However, analysis by Kick It Out found only 3.2% of executive and leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding first-team coaching level, based on data from 11 clubs, the figure is 2%.

For all coaching positions – including head coaches – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is just 5%.

"He's certainly made history in terms of him being announced as Chelsea head coach, and we want to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of ability present within black and underrepresented communities... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to show what they can do. It is imperative to persist in work hard to break those obstacles down."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become the fourth full-time British managers currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which lags behind the continent's other big five leagues regarding national managers.

16 of the 20 first division coaches in Italy are Italian, Eleven of the 20 in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga are German while 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt every young English coaches with a youth development pedigree are, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's truly motivating to young English academy coaches to witness someone get such a role with his background and we hope he will be highly successful."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is on merit'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint peaked with a brief spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he received an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling discrimination in football and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he followed a path in management. He began penning a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill arguing that roles must be awarded on merit.

He further expressed the view he would repeat: that vast under-representation results in a failure to understand regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural heritage.

In a podcast for a football podcast, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" and "passionate", noting that he understood the Netherlands international of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to Chelsea in July.

In further Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" upon hearing a staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged his support for the inclusion campaign and wrote an open letter to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "blatant" racism.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.

Chelsea had the Premier League's first black boss in Gullit as well as the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
