Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
The co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will independently develop the controversial flavor as part of a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Between Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Support
Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which was first established several years back to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, after decades of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy was undermined following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence so that the company can actualise the social mission, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
