American actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, best known for the Tony-nominated production Slave Play, was taken into custody last month at an international terminal in Japan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country, authorities stated.

Details of the Airport Apprehension

The 36-year-old was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a customs officer found 0.78 grams of a crystalline substance laced with the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his tote bag, as stated by a customs spokesperson.

He was promptly taken into custody on suspicion of breaching Japan’s strict Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Local customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the public prosecutor to commence formal charging proceedings against the playwright.

A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, confirmed that Harris remains in custody. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has acknowledged the charges.

Presently, it is not known whether the figure has secured legal representation in Japan. Requests for comment to his representatives were not answered at once.
