Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An new term surfaced several months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from doctors like paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a child who has been bereaved of their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities rejects these claims, consistent with how it denies all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what unity manifests as.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Profound Human Cost

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of someone in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
