Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This new chapter marks the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Characters
It has been established that a trio of different characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he got the offer from the original writer.
"I remember the conversation. I remember the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal situation. The possibility of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier genre films, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will find out the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
