"Half of my life is saved on this app, and suddenly they expect us to pay for it."

Negative ratings and a feeling of unfairness have taken over digital forums since Snapchat emerged as the newest technology company to start charging for a service that users previously accessed for free.

The app's parent company revealed in the fall that it would begin imposing fees people if they have exceeding five gigabytes worth of previously shared images and recordings stored as the Memories feature.

For many, these old snaps serve as a portal to bygone days – prompting some to criticize the company of "profit-driven motives" in posts on online platforms and poor reviews on digital storefronts.

Available Solutions

Snapchat's parent has likened its premium storage tiers to those offered by tech giants for smartphones.

And as an alternative for those who don't want to pay, subscribers have the ability to export their archived media – which for some span tens of gigabytes – to their personal gadget.

The firm stated that only a small number of users would be affected by the changes.

They recognized that it was "inherently difficult to move from receiving a service for free to covering the expense" – but implied it would be "a valuable investment" for users.

Many denouncing the change online seem to disagree.

Widespread Discontent

A web-based protest called the fee a "reminiscence fee", with users labeling it "bleak" and "ridiculous" – while one person vowed to quit the app again.

At the same time, in a one-star evaluation on the app marketplace, a person identifying as an online commenter said it felt "morally questionable".

"If I know millennials right, many people have years worth of memories on the platform," they said. "Numerous users only kept the app mainly for this purpose. Five gigabytes is insufficient when you have a long timeline of recordings... Goodbye to the app."

Additionally, a London-based user, a 20-year-old journalism student in a major city, posted on a social network her intention to delete the app.

"I decided that I needed to download all my saved content as quickly as possible," she stated. "The vast majority of my adolescence have been documented through my Snapchat memories, all of the images in there are extremely valuable to me."

"This seems illogical to demand payment users for something that has been at no cost for so many years."

Unknown Fees

The company has not yet said how much storage plans would require in the United Kingdom – only that they are part of a "gradual global rollout".

However 23-year-old Amber Daley, who is based in the city, stated in a video on the social platform that she would be "distraught" by such charges.

She mentioned that the app had become "integrated into daily routine" since she began accessing it in 2014.

While she said she accepted the platform needed to earn income, she indicated that the archival function holds greater significance than the firm may have realized.

"In my opinion it's quite an unfair step to charge your subscribers who have been faithful and dedicated," she said. "This feature is more than a name, these are our genuine personal moments."

Expert Analysis

Firms choosing to require payment from users for a service that was once complimentary is nothing new, and numerous people subscribe to platforms like iCloud and Google Drive to backup their photos and videos from their smartphone.

The truth of archiving content in the online servers – which various commentators in the digital field like to refer to as simply "a remote system" – is that it requires funding.

"Hosting trillions of saved content on Snapchat isn't a trivial amount," social media consultant Matt Navarra commented. "The company has to try to find a method to fund the operation of storage, network usage, back-ups, media distribution, data protection – all that stuff."

However the consultant noted that introducing fees for a function that had previously been free, and users had been invited to access as such, may appear as a "bait and switch" for certain individuals.

"Altering the terms after people have accumulated this massive online collection feels inappropriate," he explained. In the view of countless individuals, he stated, "Archived media exceeds mere information, they're sentimental records."

The sentiment was echoed by those posting critical reviews, with one person describing their saved images and clips "deeply important to me".

"The stored media includes every aspect of my life within them from joyful events like births, grieving for lost relatives, experiences shared with close ones, [and] my complete adolescence," they wrote.

Research Perspective

An academic expert, a university scholar at an educational establishment in the the Low Countries, said that the platform's decision demonstrates the implications of business-oriented apps being used to archive sentimental personal content.

"The companies profit from this reliance, interdependence, and expectation of continuous entry, which even encourages many people to continue using the app or keep accessing it in order to review their saved content," she explained to the media. "But these are not altruistic protectors of individual recollection."
