Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, following the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
